The war drove the newly married couple into paradise: Stalin's communist Soviet empire, land of many hopefuls, which at that time was only as old as themselves. They flee from Hitler's murder squads. It is a stray through scorched earth, endless steppes - with flocks of uprooted people, hunted by armies. Their flight leads them through three deaths into survival - in bombed Stalingrad.
